Boomkat Product Review:
For his second proper full length solo album, David Sylvian decided to be a little more ambitious than usual. Eschewing the mix of ambient and vocal tracks we would come to see together on his subsequent records, on ‘Gone to Earth’ Sylvian decided that it would be best to pull them apart, and what we end up with is two full length cds, one vocal and one instrumental. I’d like to say this was a horrible mistake – but in fact the move is strangely successful, disc one being the jazzy and slightly mysterious vocal part and disc two an ambient, drifting excursion perhaps comparable to the work of Harold Budd or Bill Nelson. Surprisingly it’s the second disc that I have come back to most when I listen to ‘Gone to Earth’ – it has a soothing quality to it which makes for extremely pleasant listening. Even though Sylvian would later master the blend of ambience and vocals, it’s great to hear his mind working on ‘Gone to Earth’ as he strips his important vocal parts down to nothing and concentrates instead on mood, beauty and atmosphere.
