Mike Moya has been responsible for a great deal in his time, not only was he a founder member of influential post rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor, he also managed to kick off Set Fire to Flames and Molasses too. Now he's back under the HRSTA moniker with arguably his most consistent record to date. I say consistent because this is an undeniably solemn record; it's gloomy, it's depressing... like listening to Radiohead, Leonard Cohen and Morrissey reciting the poems of Sylvia Plath...but then he's never been that cheery has he? Named 'Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Our Eyes' there couldn't be a more fitting title for the record and within a single track visions of fluttering apparitions are not far from my mind. This isn't to say that GY!BE were ever particularly upbeat, but the sound HRSTA make is low-down, dark and dirty and to be quite honest it's just the way I like it. Backed up by the omnipresent Harris Newman, Jackie O'Motherfucker's Brooke Crouser (on pump organ) and drummer Eric Craven we get a smudged haze of psychedelic sound, a far cry from the projects Moya is best known for. The press release compares him to Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, which is valid, but I can also hear echoes of Thom Yorke in 'Beau Village', something that I'm sure you realise is no bad thing at all. This is a deep, reverberating listening experience, much like the similarly excellent Vic Chesnutt album from a week ago (also on Constellation) and those of you who have enjoyed those releases really should check 'Ghosts Will Come and Kiss Our Eyes' without delay...
