Boomkat Product Review:
Part of a new two-part compilation designed to give an overview of Ghostly International's current profile, Ghostly By Night offers a glimpse of things yet to come, with ten new or previously unreleased tracks from the likes of Matthew Dear, Richard Devine, Telefon Tel Aviv, Solvent and The Sight Below. Initiating proceedings, Lusine's 'Operation Costs (Disassembled Mix)' arrives with typical robotic verve and production skill, offering an abstract opening piece before Deastro's hyperactive pop-'tronics kick in on the curious psychedelic 'Mowgli The Lynx'. Further down the line Shigeto's melodic, squished hip-hop provides a highlight, expertly slamming together hard-hitting, spongy beats with swirling synthetic melodies. Justin Broadrick (of Jesu, Godflesh, et al) arrives with one of his many aliases, Pale Sketcher, offering an enticingly hazy, ambient electronic sound on 'Plans That Fade (Faded Dub). The compilation concludes with Ghostly's current man of the moment, The Sight Below, who offers another exercise in gaseous 4/4 drone on the predictably luscious 'Unforetold'. A strong showcase from this consistently impressive electronic label.
