Gatto Fritto
Romantic analogue synth-pop and disco from Ben Williams (half of Hungry Ghost with Sam Weaver) for DJ Harvey's International Feel Recordings - some junction of Umberto's horror theme and IDIB's midnight Italo pop moods. His eponymous debut album follows a string of 12"s for Dissident and Electric Minds a few years back, and still distinguished by all-analogue production values and a mature feel for disco-friendly arrangements. Cracking in, 'The Curse' opens with a boost of rocking' Italo arpeggios and effete male vocals reminding of Autre Ne Veut, next to the 'Hex', a fine fusion of Giallo moodiness like Nite Jewel meets Ensemble Economique maybe? The tension is raised with the Jan Hammer excesses of 'Grinding Of The Brakes' and resolved on the beatless synth glide of 'Solar Flares Burn For You' before it all gets groovier, from the motorik disco epic 'Invisible College', through the sexy conga ripples of 'My Etheric Body'. The ultimate conclusion is 'Beachy Head', eight minutes of twirling synths and motorik machine rhythms hitting the mark between Harald Grosskopf and Chris Carter.
