Being total Modeselektor devotees, nay obsessives, imagine our surprise and delight to have heard good old Thom Yorke spin their last, epic 12” “Death Medley” on Radio One some weeks back. Over the space of two EP’s (this is their third), the selektahs have delighted with a cut up, intricatly constructed, crunchy and always well-humoured take on beat jugglin and electronic dancefloor decimation. These elements come together once again across this killer 4-tracker, starting off with the onslaught provided by “Teknoprostitution..”, a track that brings together a ragga riddim, a jump-up electroid hip hop vibe, distortion, stop-start techniques, hoover sounds and even an ice-cream van Bacharach sample...a Jackin’ monster of a tune. Before the action picks up on the flip, a 4-minute cut-up of the football commentary from Germany’s 1:0 win over USA in the last world cup is spun out – a sociopolitical commentary of some sorts, or just a daft scratch tool – either way its oddly compelling and sums up just how funny this lot are...4 minutes! “Don’t Panic” opens up the flipside and is a more reflective cut-up number, beats at Hip Hop tempo, intricacies flying about and machine made melodies a la Aphex circa Richard D James, or Lexaunculpt, some orchestral sweeps streaming in for good measure. Ace. Modeselektor’s remix of Ellen Allien’s “Trash Scapes” is up last and simply sh*t’s on anything featured on last week’s “Trashscapes” EP, Ellen’s modified vocal crafted-in expertly with that signature mdslktr beat arrangement taking shape underneath. Killer material – essential purchase.
