Immaculately jangling, synth-powered indie-pop and new wave moves from Craft Spells, new on Captured Tracks. Fans of similarly 80s-fixated CT acts like MiNKS, Blank Dogs and Cosmetics - not to mention the older artists that the label has reissued of late, like The McTells and Medicine - will be instantly drawn to the anthemic sweep and suburban ennui of these six finely honed songs. Unlike a lot of people operating in this scene, Craft Spells present music of great clarity; they use tons of reverb, but never let it overwhelm their parts, and Justin Vallesteros's lovelorn lyrics are audible to the letter. For us, the band are at their best when most faithfully visiting C86 and post-post-punk tropes, as on 'Burst' and 'Still Left With Me', and the more disco-accented numbers like 'Leave My Shadow' are less satisfying. An innovative use of percussion throughout gives the songs purpose and drive, as opposed to listless shoegaze drift. Nice.
