Boomkat Product Review:
Up until 1996 Gez Varley was a part of LFO alongside Mark Bell. Since going it alone he's bused himself with releases on K7, Force Inc. and Quatermass. This latest release comes courtesy of Persistencebit, and takes the form of a remix collection. First comes Carsten Fietz's remix of 'G 11', a pounding uptempo techno cut delivered in a classic Surgeon-like fashion. Next, Varley adopts his G-Man alias to reconfigure his track 'Slaunch' into a dark, building factory-scape with beats that accumulate pressure on a bed of flurried hat sounds. Nadja Lind's reworking of 'G 11' takes things into a spacey, almost disco-like direction at first, only for deep grey ambient textures to undermine any such notion a few moments in. Finally, new track 'Higher' rounds the EP off nicely, with melodic mid-tempo grooves and a timeless techno sound-set as its starting point.
