Boomkat Product Review:
The third album by Lowlights, a project led by singer-songwriter and Albuquerque native Dameon Waggoner,, whose compositions are tuned in to the darker side of Americana, instantly sounding like a gothed-up Calexico on 'Under The Sun', combining Western motifs with mariachi horns and heaps of dusty reverb. Elsewhere you'll hear turns toward more upbeat fare, such as 'California Home', but still there's a shadowy presence hovering around, and it always seems to stem from Waggoner's vocal. The faintly sinister delivery brings a darkness to Lowlights' country-rock idiom that only helps bring an edge to the album - particularly on the murder ballads. For fans of the aforementioned Calexico, Bright Eyes and Castanets, Further / Free comes highly recommended.
