Boomkat Product Review:
Smart, snappy house and bruk techno bumpers from UK producer Gareth Sprey, arriving on Diskotopia after debut last year for Alexander Nut's Ho Tep imprint. The unorthodox Diskotopia catalogue - one where Slackk sits alongside Hong Kong In the 1960s - is the perfect home for Mau'lin, whose music pushes all sorts of buttons but defies easy categorisation. The title track is a beauty, coming over like a more blunted Sully, while 'Duties' combines with Detroit atmospherics with rugged broken beats with an assurance that recalls the classic drops of 2000Black and Cousin Cockroach, and 'Starbeast' ramps up the sub-bass ruffage to 11. Remixes come from Jack Dixon in full-fat techno-funk mode, Greeen Linez doing their strung-out boogie-soul thing, and Am Rhein aiming for a timeless Continental house sound. DJs need to get on this package sharpish.
