Boomkat Product Review:
Not to be confused with the mighty Japanese duo of the same name, this Ruins are in fact a Tasmanian duo who obscure the boundaries between death metal and black metal, combining the aggression and heaviness of the former with the DIY theatricality of the latter (cue wolf howls during 'Hallways Of The Always'). The Debemur Morti label offer a more colourful assessment however, billing this as: "the personification of malignity, the birth of malice, the genesis of anti-life". There are plenty of powerhouse sounds on offer here, with towering riffs at every turn, but (depending on your tolerance for these things) the ever-so-slightly wince-inducing lyrics are probably a little too readily decipherable for their own good; the band get the right idea with the lyric sheet however, its nigh-on illegible 19th century scrawl and curly calligraphy taking the appearance of a Samuel Taylor Coleridge manuscript after a heavy night on the laudanum.
