Boomkat Product Review:
30 minutes of kaleidoscopic tribal lushness from France's High Wolf, making his debut on Félicia Atkinson and Bartolomé Sanson's Shelter Press label after aces from KFW, Pete Swanson, Terrence Hannum, DVVLLXNS. 'Freedom Or Death' follows the colourful cacophony of his 'Kairos: Chronos' session for Not Not Fun with an equally attuned sense of ecstatic abandon in two extended, lysergic improvisations that suck us in and spit us out skittle-coloured. The trip starts out measured and motorik with tumbling rhythmelodic percussion and alien synth scrabble before darting off at right angles into zones between the deviant modular madness of Ekoplekz, the driving loops of Harmonious Thelonious or the brain re-wiring patterns of his Iibiis Rooge collaborator, Astral Social Club. Everything feels rendered with a piquant brilliance allowing the detailed layering and intricacy of his haphazard syncopations to really draw us in and gobble us whole.
