Boomkat Product Review:
This is the second in a series of releases where one man Free Jazz industry Ken Vandermark flexes his musical muscles to pay tribute to artists who have influenced him over the years. This double-set features a double-helping, the first a tribute to sax legend Sonny Rollins called ‘Six For Rollins’ and the second a tribute to the multi-sax playing Roland Kirk entitled ‘Free Kings – The Music of Roland Kirk’. Being a contemporary of free jazz troubadours such as the unpredictably fabulous Mats Gustavsson, you know you can expect Free Jazz of the highest order here, this is no mere tribute, more a rework, re-imagining and re-awakening of a true artist. I realize that Free Jazz has a habit of polarizing many listeners, but Vandermark’s work on this record has the potential to sway the uninitiated, it manages to be intriguing without being trying, a major achievement in itself.
