Boomkat Product Review:
This was the debut album by General Magic, the duo of Ramon Bauer and Andi Pieper. Alongside Peter Rehberg the duo pioneered the Mego sound on the by now legendary Fridge Trax 12". The sounds on this album still push the boundaries of acceptable audio constructions. The quivering dropout-laced opener 'Tyrell' is just nuts, while the sample smashing ways of 'Madshoes' and 'The Official GM Ski-wm Theme' are a real hoot. There are some pretty ominous industrialized glitch-scapes at work here too though: the abrasive crackle and room drone of 'Temko' make for a particularly disorientating five minutes, while the corrupted bleeps and oscillations of 'Obvious' make for a pretty brain-frying sonic trip. As with much of the early Mego line-up the spectre of techno hangs over Frantz, with surreal beat structures rising from the digital clamour throughout the album. Another classic from the Mego vaults.
