Boomkat Product Review:
Highly-wired antics from the big daft mutant Powell, squirting Frankie and Jonny from his upcoming Sport album onto one 45rpm single for the freaks and geeks.
Fronted by HTRK’s Jonnine Standish, Jonny follows a shark-eyed line between sawn-off, swaggering drums, wizzy MS-20 stabs and barely-hinged, hacked up hair guitar riffs that threaten to spill out into a vinegary solo that thankfully never comes.
Flipside, Frankie owes obvious allegiance to a cornerstone by Powell’s all-time heroes, Suicide’s Frankie Teardrop, in name at least, if not in its needling drive and taste for biting electronics.
We keep mishearing Jonine’s vocals as “Canter Culture” which fits almost as neatly as the song’s “Counter Culture” hook, and it is a proper song; the first in Powell’s well stocked cabinet of bony, instrumental mutants, replete with intro, verse, chorus, verse and all those other things that mek up a tune. Heck you could even hum along to it.
