A founding member of Tarantel, Danny Paul Grody makes his solo debut with Fountain. Taking solo acoustic guitar pieces as a starting point, Grody spins a series of delicate, very finely produced and presented instrumentals. In addition to the conventional John Fahey, Robbie Basho and Peter Walker influences you might detect, Grody also derives inspiration from West African kora music - something that clearly impacts upon his picking technique as much as the compositions themselves. Grody's style is incredibly melodic, and rather than focusing on fancy technique the guitar becomes a foundation for decorative and memorably tuneful composition. There's a certain amount of soundscaping gone into the album too, leading to pieces like the lovely miniature 'Well Wisher' with its keyed counter melody, or the gauzy drone piece 'Covered Mirrors'. It's during these unusual ambient-folk moments that Grody really singles himself out: 'Fountain' is wonderfully rich in atmospherics, and better yet is the closing piece 'Finding Time', a kind of filtered, faded and worn down constellation of tones.
