Boomkat Product Review:
Discovered and subsequently co-produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor, Twin Shadow is the recording alias of George Lewis Jr. whose brand of '80s inspired pop music somehow finds its very own special niche in a musical marketplace already saturated with sounds that, on paper at least, meet that description. As bedroom-crafted pop music goes, Lewis' achievements are mightily impressive, and Forget is loaded with intelligent, hook-filled pop songs that feel far bigger than their humble origins would suggest. Perhaps like a more concise and generally more effective counterpart to Violens' recent album, Amoral, Forget at times brings to mind bands like Simple Minds or even Ultravox, darting between various stylistic inclinations that have scarcely been put to such good usage since the world first heard them twenty-five to thirty years or so ago. This is a record stuffed with chorused guitars, funk-tinged basses and more queasy gated reverb than you could ever possibly desire, yet the quality of the songs and productions prevent such cosmetic choices from becoming irritating, and instead songs like 'Slow' and 'I Can't Wait' feel magical, fresh and paradoxically very modern; Twin Shadow sounds like the blurry, soft focus world of chillwave cleaned up - as if someone's finally wiped the vaseline off the lens. Highly recommended.
