Boomkat Product Review:
UK club phenom Batu leads the dance deep and wayward on first shot from his new label, A Long Strange Dream.
After recalibrating his sound with crystal clarity and hydrodynamics on the ‘Opal’ album at the end of 2022, Batu minted this new label for a back-to-basics approach for sharing his music. ‘For Spirits’ is a club dedicated EP for daring DJs and proper dancers, weighing in some of his slipperiest and deeply forward, imaginative mutations of techno, UKG, electro and “bass” music forms, plus two pieces of lush, beat-less sound design for strong measure.
Smelting zither and zipping synth lines in fluid UKG experimentalism, ’Traverse’ establishes coordinates for a sick set that bends to the niftiest kongo tekno stepper ‘For Spirits’, and follows his hunch for sweltering, offbeat UK techno momentum with ‘In Tongues’, while the hyper-planing glyde and layered, textural sensitivity of ‘Foraged in the Margins’ and the radiant refractions of kalimba-like plucks and Indian-sounding vocal cadence to ‘Through the Glass’ ideally characterise his peerless range and depth.
