Boomkat Product Review:
Kelis switches to a Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio) produced glossy sixth album dripping with funk, soul, gospel and Afrobeat influences. 'Food' is the equivalent of comfort eating, heavily informed by a nostalgic impression of the music Kelis grew up with - her father was a Jazz musician - and therefore flush with "proper" instruments accompanied by some electronic embellishments just to let you know it was actually released in 2014. It revolves around an eponymous theme relating to her studies as a saucier - she graduated from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school - crowbarred into the track titles, 'Breakfast', 'Jerk Ribs', 'Friday Fish Fry', 'Biscuits N' Gravy', and lyrics. As the old adage goes it's best to sing about what you know, and thankfully her breathy yet confident voice is rightly the record's redeeming feature.
