Boomkat Product Review:
With all these Dust-to-Digital compilations lately it might seem like we've developed something of an obsession for crumbly old 78rpm records - well I guess we have, there's nothing better than curling up by the fire and putting some of that old time music on - we can't get enough! This particular compilation focuses on the humble fiddle, an instrument which is probably much better known for lending its unique stringy sound to classical music, but it was just as popular in the early 20th century for accompanying anyone making pretty much any kinda music. Across 24 tracks here we have a wide variety of old-time styles covered from jazz to blues and shuffle and it's all of typically high quality. The degradation and crackle of course becomes yet another instrument and serves as the perfect percussion accompaniment to the haunting fiddle sounds which rise and fall so gracefully. Anyone who managed to get hold of 'Desperate Man Blues', the documentary about Joe Bussard's obsessive collecting will no doubt be interested in this compilation - it's a great starting point for those of us dying to nuzzle deeper into 1920s and 1930s American music! Recommended.
