Boomkat Product Review:
"Following their debut EP from last year Eyes in the Ground (Chapel Yard Records) Exotic Pylon presents Fluttercage, the debut album from Matt Bower and April Larson aka Isobel Ccircle. Matt Bower (The Revenant Sea, Wizards Tell Lies) whose influences run the gamut from the Radiophonic Workshop to Pan Sonic via Tom Waits is Yorkshire-based whilst April Larson keeps Snakes and self-releases oneironautic CDr’s from her native Louisiana. If you need to categorise Isobel Ccircle~ then you might find yourself referring to dark ambient or drone which is useful for a press release but otherwise hopeless as Fluttercage is a singularly uncanny transmission. Neither Heaven nor Hell, these unsettling environments trip the perception awakening the listener to the teeming weirdness around us – the world we touch when our filters aren’t firing haywire blocking out the strange so we can work ourselves to death. Isobel Ccircle~ is a refracted reality – a lysergic emotional grey area that unsettles whilst still mesmerising. Fluttercage further upsets though as these occult explorations seem to co-exist equally under the light of a harsh sun as well as the dead of night like the ghost of Alan Splet wandering a vast open plain in a rural industrial hinterland… This is a lucid dream where all things are possessed with life and you can hear the souls of the inanimate whispering secret codes and projecting unrecognisable auras. Sounds and textures range from melancholy music boxes to layers of contained noise, gaseous silence, electronic interference, vague intimations of voice, waves of intangible sound, processed signals and unsettling found sound. As forbidding as it is hypnotic, this is the Fluttercage is the sound of haunted nature and our place in it."
