Patten commits his 4th album of rugged IDM, ‘Flex’ as the first release on his 555-5555 label
With the pivotal 2011 LP ‘GLAQJO XAACSSO’ and a pair of albums for Warp under his belt, Patten sees this decade off with a tight, punchy brace of mutated grime, techno, jungle, footwork and drill rhythms swarmed by fractal electronics and rudely textured noise.
Coming on like the bastard offspring of Basic Rhythm, NHK and a yoghurt-soaked CPU, the 14 tracks of ‘Flex’ are drivingly kitted out for the ‘floor, but also spun out with a sort of organic, warped psychedelic tang, demonstrated best in the likes of his virulent, Zomby-esque swanger ‘Threnody’, the junglist chicanery of ‘Chimera’ and ‘Riptide’, or the brilliant polymetric fuckry of ‘VelvetScans’ and his killer, jagged juke banger ‘Infrared.’ Really good stuff.
