Boomkat Product Review:
American musician Andrew Bird is a perfect fit on Bella Union if you think about it. His very particular brand of jangling post-folk is so effortlessly enjoyable and well meaning that it sits up extremely comfortably next to Fleet Foxes and Peter Broderick. He's been a staple of the Chicago scene since 1996 now, but it's with this latest five track EP that I think Bird has reached his stride. The music sounds confident without being cocky, and this confidence adds an immeasurable air of beauty to these chunky songs. The title track is Bird's biggest shot at a 'crossover' success with its scuzzy charm and near lo-fi production, but every song on here is a winner - it's far from your usual collection of half-arsed b-sides and remixes. It isn't often these days that what is intrinsically a singer-songwriter record grabs my attention as there have been far too many in recent years, but trust Bella Union to lay their hands on the one that does. Gorgeous music.
