Boomkat Product Review:
The man is prolific; we have to give him that. Now on it’s seventeenth instalment, John Zorn’s hugely acclaimed Filmworks collection is still high enough quality to warrant your attention. This particular edition features music created for Marie Menken, a maverick filmmaker who was closely associated with Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage and Andy Warhol among many others in the US experimental cinema scene. This particular project is more Zorn classic, deep soundtrack moods played impeccably by the finest players in the industry (including drum master Kenny Wollesen) fusing jazz with dark exotica and is sure to appeal to followers of Ennio Morricone. The second project is more unusual, it was developed for a documentary on legendary skull collector Ray Bandar, and the tracks are polyrhythmic African influence pieces, using thumb piano as the main source.
