Boomkat Product Review:
A member of the WEDIDIT collective alongside Shlohmo, Groundislava's shares his California peers' fascination with swung, stuttering 808 percussion and emotive instrumental textures chopped and screwed into abstraction. What makes him stand out is his fascination with, and foregrounding of, the synth: Fairlight epics 'Olympia 2011' and 'TV Dream' (featuring Clive Tanaka) sound like they're auditioning for the soundtrack of Drive 2, while the suitably woozy 'Cider' sounds like a footwork track that's been slowed down and spiked by Boards of Canada at a woodland rave in Scotland (the BoC influence is pronounced throughout, not least on the excellent 'After Hours'). With further guest spots from Baths, Shlohmo and Jake Weary, this is a dreamy but measured album; it suggests that Groundislava, unlike many of his contemporaries, is in this game for the long haul.
