Boomkat Product Review:
A bumper pack of bass-heavy bangers here from fresh Belgian imprint Pelican Fly. Anyone who snapped up the TNGHT EP last year and was left pining for more needs to look no further, while there are eight artists on show here, each one seems to have taken a step in the direction of that very specific fusion of UK bass music and US rap. Sinjin Hawke’s ‘Prom Night’ is an operatic, epic string-laced punch in the face, but ‘Feathers’ isn’t all teeth chattering up-front hugeness – opener ‘Money Cat’ from Zora Jones is an indication that even footwork can sound ethereal, ghostly and dare we say it ambient. Our big picks would be Cashmere Cat’s low-slung ‘Aurora’, which manages to straddle the Night Slugs neon fixation while still keeping things decidedly street level and Samename’s grimey Wiley-esque ‘Mishima Curse’ which shows yet again why he’s the producer everyone’s talking about right now.
