Boomkat Product Review:
Taking the vocals of TV chefs, pitch-shifting them and then spraying their dislocated prose all over wheezing accordions, twinkly instrumentals, digital dalliances and plump pianos might not sound the most appetizing of propositions, but somehow it just works. Scarred onto an XXX limited picture disc, this Ascoltare/UM split 12" opens with Ascoltare's culinary cut-ups; morphing Rick Stein into a truly threatening entity as he berates you over French fish markets and exposing Gordon Ramsey as the bullying twat he is with a DJ friendly set of cussing rants. With the first course done, turn over the plate and it's UM's go; wherein Cambridge's favourite son delivers a hop-scotch of disparate styles and production techniques that range from V/VM style cartoontronica through to mahogany folk songs covered in tarnished pink glitter.
