Another cracking round-up of Factory Records' eclectic and influential catalogue of 12" mixes and rarities 1980-87. Over two discs there's a multitude of timeless classics, unknown gems and the kind of inspired music which ran both counter to and against the post-punk and dancefloor grain of the '80s. Classics come from ESG with 'Moody' and 'You're No Good', Fadela's Algerian electro-disco ace 'N'Sel Fik' and The Durutti Column's 'Self Portrait', but of far more interest are the one's we didn't already know about. Cuts like 'Babcock + Wilcox' - an uptempo gem written by New York duo Thick Pigeon and produced by Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert - or the killer electro-pop of expat Manc-in-Berlin Shark Vegas 'You Hurt Me', which was produced at Conny Plank's studio by Bernard Sumner, whom Shark Vegas had been sending mixtapes since 1979 (go figure!), or equally the likes of Nyam Nyam's hypnotic Italo rocker 'Fate', Anna Domino's smooth electro swinger 'Take That' or The Wake's raincoated stepper 'Host'. So, wethinks a trip to vinyl exchange might be in order for us.
