Kieran Hebden's FabricLive mix was always going to be a big deal and sure enough he's delivered the goods, turning out a 27-track session that tracks his interest in garage, UK Funky and latterday bass musics alongside more Continental house and techno styles (and beyond). It's impeccably mixed, of course, but instead of going for a seamless journey from start to finish, he's broken things up with a clutch of field recordings taken at the club; these interludes are intended to replicate the experience of moving from room to room in Fabric's labyrinthine underground space. Anyway, what matters is the music, and it's pretty spot-on to be honest: the inclusion of a number of classic, sub-heavy 2-steppers (from Crazy Baldhead and Persian among others) is very welcome indeed, as is the much-deserved rinse-out for Apple's foundational but oft-forgotten Funky anthem 'Mr Bean'. Chuck in class contemporary productions from the likes of Shed (WK7), STL, Villalobos and Burial, C++'s legendary glitch-techno floor-burner 'Angie's F*cked', some special remixes from Hebden himself and archival synth experiments from David Borden and Michael Redolfi, and you have yourself a mix as illuminating as it is boundlessly entertaining. Top stuff.
