Boomkat Product Review:
Another excellent new Warp signing, Nice Nice continue the label's current fine run of form with an album full of tumbling, joyous experimental electronic rock music. Expanding upon the uncategorisable tropical krautrock and psychedelic beats of singles 'One Hit' and 'See Waves', the album doesn't fail to inspire awe and bemusement in equal measure. This Portland duo are at their best on tracks such as 'A Way We Glow' and 'Everything Falling Apart', bounding around their mixes with a colourful, anything-goes abandon - perhaps faintly suggesting The Flaming Lips trapped in the Amazon basin. Elsewhere, 'Big Bounce' is true to its name, adopting a similar beat to The Big Pink's 'Dominos', infusing a dub rhythm with a spot of Hawaiian guitar and distant, echo-driven vocals, while 'A Little Love' throws in some crazed, heavily detuned drone (which strangely doesn't sabotage the pop credentials of the piece too much) and 'Double Head' makes like an African rethink of Fuck Buttons' dense and hypnotic sound. Given the intensity of it all and the sheer amount going on over the course of the record, there's probably a case to be made for Extra Wow being a tad too long at its fifty-minutes plus duration, but then this is an album that thrives on excess and exaggeration. Recommended.
