Extra Presence
Prolific LA beat scene survivor Carlos Niño assembles his friends (Sam Gendel, Laraaji, Shabazz Palaces, Iasos and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, among others) for an expanded 90-minute version of 2020's "Actual Presence".
Back in early 2020, as the world was plunged into lockdown, Carlos Niño descended into his studio and began rummaging through his stack of tapes. One session kept drawing his attention, a "Just Jazz" performance from 2019 with Devin Daniels, Jamael Dean, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and Randy Gloss. He remembered it had been an awkward night, where he'd had a revelation: he wasn't playing songs, it was something more fluid - "sonic journeying". Niño went back to this material, remixing and re-recording the stems, then invited his friends to do the same, adding overdubs as they wanted. The result was a 10-track set - "Actual Presence" - released on Niño's own Bandcamp page back in 2020.
'Extra Presence' fills out the project even further, adding a full hour of additional material, the most exceptional being 23-minute ambient jammer 'Recurrent Reiki Dreams' featuring IASOS. A luxurious expansion of the original album's final track 'Mushroomeclipse', it's a watery new age excursion that harks back to the days of private press LPs and sex cults. Basically, essential listening.
