Boomkat Product Review:
A sumptuous suite of sophisticated, cinematic compositions by Montreal's Olivier Alary's Ensemble. Joined by award-winning film and theatre composer Johannes Malfatti and sharing bilingual vocals with long-term collaborator Darcy Conroy, Alary has hatched an indivisible blend of lush Gallic pop, heart swelling orchestrations and unconventional post-rock/indie without any clear precedents. The scope of 'Excerpts' perhaps shares something in common with Matthew Herbert's eccentric command of big band instrumentation or Yann Tiersen's melancholy romance, but the sentiments and taste for updating traditional forms with experimental arrangements is individual to this album. While his previous LP for FatCat featured star-studded collaborations with Cat Power and Lou Barlow, this one is more than comfortable to create its own sense of personal fiction.
