Boomkat Product Review:
Smudged, cosmic froth from Portland's Julius Theory, who channel West Coast new age and Berlin school psychedelia into dub-adjacent, ferric frames. RIYL Experiences Ltd, Gas, Sferic.
Dubbed back in February 2018, "Evolution" was made in Portland, Oregon using "polluted synthesizers", samples and field recordings. For anyone into Experiences' long-form barely-breathing cloud surfing, this one should keep you gripped: the album's first substantial track 'Salvaged Good' layers comb filtered pads across swirled environmental sounds, positioning you in Portland's bustling cityscape while simultaneously squirting hallucinogens into yer brain.
The 20-minute 'SSRI Prophet' is even better, abstracting muddy electric piano loops and distant off-world abstractions and creating a teeming sonic landscape. At moments it sounds as if you've stuck yer head into a vintage VR machine, with the channels caught between jungle mode and a crackly radio advert. Pillowy as fuck, but weird with it.
