Further expanding outwards from their art-punk origins, Sub Pop duo Dean Spunt and Randy Randall head in directions that are simultaneously more experimental and more entrenched in the language of pop music. Everything In Between is No Age's second full-length for the iconic Seattle label and arrives on the heels of appetite-whetting noise-rock single, 'Glitter', whose marriage of classic, grungey songwriting and cut'n'paste feedback sets the standard for what unfolds over this forty-minute LP. The pulsing electronic chug of 'Life Prowler' is an offsettingly contemplative opening cut, but it's not too long before the duo are blistering their way through the brilliant 'Fever Dreaming' and 'Depletion' - the latter of which brings to mind the emotive fuzzball songwriting of J Mascis. For all their courtship of noise and willfully shoddy vocal tunings, Spunt and Randall sound very much at home when gunning for big, sloppy choruses as on 'Valley Hum Crush', whose squawking jangle comes sheepishly sandwiched between guitar-drone interlude 'Katerpillar' and the tumbling electronics of 'Sorts'. Making an even more clear-cut break for soaring pop magnificence, 'Skinned' lurches between rabble-rousing, memorable chord changes, while the awesome, 'Chem Trails' brings an all-conquering full-stop to the album; at times sounding vaguely like a basement-dwelling cross-pollination of 'Pretty In Pink' and Bowie's 'Heroes' as it jangles through battered acoustic guitars, whinnying organs and all the requisite layers of fuzz and distortion.
