Boomkat Product Review:
When you go through the whole process of picking yourself a band name usually it takes weeks, sometimes months, sometimes even years! It’s very difficult to come up with something that suitably represents exactly what you’re trying to get across to your listening public. So how exactly did ‘Amps for Christ’ come up with their name, by the look of the record sleeve I don’t think they really care about their public perception so I doubt the name had much to do with that… so what was it? Well on listening to the music I can safely say it is indeed mad as houses, it’s nuts, it’s bonkers, it’s lost the plot, and in light of this the vaguely blasphemous name is positively pedestrian. The beautifully titled ‘Cock O’The North’ for instance, which came up titled simply ‘Cock’ in Itunes, is a stompin’ folk hoedown, and ‘Out on the Moon’ sounds like Deep Purple playing Celtic love songs… Don’t worry though, it’s not as bad as it sounds, in all it’s utter mentalism the album is actually rather lovely. It’s got a sense of humour certainly but it’s not zany to the point of being cringe-worthy. Sometimes oddballs are good for you, and Amps for Christ put their money where their cross is.
