Berceuse Heroique back with a particularly strong entry in their limited edition tape series, a highly atmospheric feature-length session from Significant Other, modelling and emulating sensations of urban ennui experienced during an extended period of illness in the Big Apple. Field recordings elide original music and tube-sourced collage in a captivating slant on environmental ambient, fritzed dub and skewed soul music, very highly recommended if yr into the blurred dreamweaving of YL Hooi/F Ingers, or Space Afrika’s iconic Hybtwibt?
Significant Other, whose previous releases for the YOUTH and anna labels already betrayed a keening emotional heft, takes us on a deep and moody session played out through 75 minutes of varying atmospheric pressures, meant to convey the din and density of life in NYC, parsing beauty from the chaos. “Amidst the collapse of my physical health, it was a time of alienation where I was forced to contend with the juxtaposition of my hectic adoptive home and my newfound physical restrictions, and the wider implications of what this meant for my relationship with electronic music.”
Recorded in a single take, the mix takes us thru a broad spectrum of atmospheres linked by a keening sense of motion (bordering on motion sickness) modulating the tone between etheric sublime, spirit-crushed doom and OOBE-like rhythmic diffusions that hark to his ace debut LP ‘Residuum’. Blasted echoes of soundsystem music white-out into fritzed pulses and intensify into deco-club musicks within slow, then rushy attacks, collapsing to passages of shoegaze bliss, dubbed out hallucinations and string-led anguish, resolving with incandescent ambient-pop that glistens in the low light.
A real, moody, late night special this one.
