Erosion Trace
Part of the first vinyl batch from ace tape distro/label, Industrial Coast; Glyn Maier’s mesmerising elision of field recordings and synths makes for a wholly immersive ecosphere set to be inhabited by fans of Ron Nagorcka, David Toop, Chris Watson, Jana Winderen, Chain Reaction, Dave NYZ.
Whether known for his slippery rhythms as Lack, as presented by Mike Simonetti, or for parsing The Silent Hill computer game soundtrack and /\\ Aught catalogue for Emmanuel Vincent Presents label, and more recently still his ventures with enmossed; Glyn Maier has earned underground recognition for his lush, world-building vision of electro-acoustic/concrète music over the past decade. ‘Erosion Trace’ now projects some of his most engrossing work within the first set of records from Teesside, UK’s Industrial Coast, manufactured locally by the admirable Press On plant, and smartly diverging with his previous work into a coarse yet sublime blend of granular electronics and location sounds rich with timbral variegation in a way recalling David Toop and Vladislav Delay reworking Popol Vuh scores for Werner Herzog.
Transitioning from womblike ambient to drenched, symphonic panoramas, ’Erosion Trace’ is the best place to dive, head first, into Maier’s fecund sonisphere. It’s the sort of music possibly best received eyes-shut with windows open, where the likes of ‘Cyfddydd’, teeming with insectoid and avian details, lures deep into its writhing layers, and makes the minimalism of his curdled tunings on ‘Appressorium’ stand out by contrast, especially before plunging into the slow-boiled fantasy roil of ‘Emerald Pool’, a 9 minute beauty that feels like batheing in a jungle pool, lit by shards of light penetrating the canopy, whilst nibbled by piranha. The masterful closing sequence of tropical downpour and heart-in-mouth strings resolves the trip with a blissed kiss-off you do not want to miss.
