Boomkat Product Review:
Shanghai’s cult coven Svbkvlt kick off 2020 with the gnostech club animism of Seven Orbits’ debut EP, including a collab with TSVI and backed with remixes by 33EMYBW, Gooooose and Zaliva-D
Rendering the sonic quota of a wider A/V project “designed for immersive sensory experiences”, the five original tracks of ‘EP0001’ fold club music into probing, awkward, and thrilling new shapes that arguably live up to the producer’s intention to induce altered states of perception and smartly prize electronic dance music’s potential for emulating and manifesting unseen, unspoken aspects of the modern zeitgeist.
‘Ravevv101’ rolls out at tumbling junglist angles with a weightless centre of gravity and dynamic that recalls Sophia Loizou and The Sprawl, while ‘Mantis’ is poised on the halfstep and pent with gibbering vocal that’s released in entrancing, Enya-like choral figures on ‘Ganglion’, before he teams with hard drum catalyst TSVI for the tight but rabid jungle tekno futurism of ‘Submechanophobia’, and wraps up with an industrial dancehall battery, ‘SandGrainss’.
Remixing, Svbkvlt’s wildcard Gooooose resets ‘Ganglion’ to a deviant step somewhere between Rian Treanor and Beatrice Dillon; Zaliva-D treats ‘Mantis’ to their viscous dancehall styles; and 33EMYBW exerts her unique angles on an increasingly messed up take of ’Submechanophobia’.
