Part of Naarm's burgeoning experimental scene, Vietnamese-Australian composer Carolyn Schofield combines loose synthetic threads on "Endless Filament", shifting sounds on an almost imperceptible level. RIYL Eleh, Éliane Radigue, Stephan Mathieu.
Schofield attempts to mimic "the endless flow of energy through space and time" on "Endless Filament", and does so without any of the usual sci-fi posturing or cybernetic signals. Instead she looks towards the world of deep listening, using variously fluttering stacked synthesizer tones to create levitating chords that change slowly but purposefully. There's a meditative quality to the piece, but it's also deeply poetic - not simple by any means, the 15-minute piece fizzes, bubbles and flows like water, disrupting the mind's experience with each listen.
With clear stylistic links to Éliane Radigue's careful drones and Eleh's more recent compositions, Schofield's Longform Editions composition is completely enveloping and effortlessly engrossing, like a warm blanket inscribed with sacred knowledge. Recommended.
