Lee Gamble’s UIQ unveil the fierce label debut of Corin, a Filipina-Australian artist exploring interests in ancestral myth and speculative fiction thru the prism of contemporary sound design and club music - RIYL Zuli, Second Woman, Gabber Modus Operandi
Further developing their style of martial dancefloor arts and architextural sound sculpture following the ‘Manifest’ LP in 2019 for Bedouin Records, plus their input to the installation ‘AEON†’ with Justin Shoulder, and on Angela Goh’s dance performance ’Sky Blue Mythic,’ Corin really doubles down on the razor sharp sound design aspects of their aesthetic in ‘Enantiodromia.’ On a literal level the title references “the tendency of things to change into their opposites,” and, in context of Corin’s music, it signifies an urge to metaphorically model ideas of impermanence, with six tracks of restless rhythm and shapeshifting textures that reflect states of flux and the ravishing movement of sound within imagined space.
As used to soundtracking bodies in a club as they are actors on a stage, Corin brings a keen sense of dramaturgy to proceedings in all six succinct parts of ‘Enantiodromia.’ Combining a fine knowledge of movement within classical music with the functional rules of club styles, they explore every angle of a noumenal 3D sound stage, flinging bodies from the neurofunk kata of the title track into gyring gamelan-like space on ‘Ex Nilalang,’ and the rangy, balletic floor moves of ’Sublimate.’ At the EP’s core ‘Mnemosyne’ appears to contact the dynamics to a more sinuous, reticulated flow comparable with Second Woman designs, while the scattergun kicks and harpy stabs of ‘Hidden In Plain Sight’ remind to the possessed hardcore of Gabber Modus Operandi, and ‘Dromos’ yields to a viscous sort of industrial dembow swanger akin to recent M.E.S.H. mutations.
