Electronic Music In The Classroom
'Electronic Music In The Classroom' is the first release on Cafe Kaput, the boutique imprint belonging to Jon Brooks aka The Advisory Circle and now D.D. Denham. It's a clear reference to Daphne Oram's 'Listen, Move and Dance' and the output of the Radiophonic Workshop aimed towards educating children in electronic music. So Denham creates the sort of sound world which would be fascinating to a child 30 years ago, perhaps less so now in their media-saturated bubbles, but those children are now you and I, and its just incredibly charming. He covers a broad spectrum of esoteric sounds and disciplines, from pastoral folk guitar and synth tones on 'Ship Shore' to choral drone on 'Nuns', bloopy tapes loops in 'Slow Chaffinch', dynamic electro acoustics '1 2 3 4' and textured musique concrète 'Under The Water Picture', all executed with a sincerity that can't be faked. Judging from the calibre of this release, Cafe Kaput has the potential to be a special label, comparable with the likes of Ghost Box and Mordant Music. Highly Recommended.
