Venerable synth pioneer and Mute founder Daniel Miller connects with studio veteran Gareth Jones for a third conjuring of kosmische spirits as Sunroof.
Building on decades of collaborative experience, both together and with everyone from Depeche Mode to Einstürzende Neubauten, Erasure and Yann Tiersen, the duo stick to a forward-looking gear with results that nevertheless remind of vintage synth explorations of the past, for near 50 years in which they’ve been active. Comparable to Silver Apples of the Moon as much as Conrad Schnitzler and Carlos Griffoni, the nine tracks tweak out a Eurorack modular system for all it’s worth, at best in the ice cavern-chiselled dimension of ‘Ensnare’ which foreground the LP as lead single, and taking in their stride a stripe of pulsating, coldwavey thrum on ‘Freezer’, whilst unbuckling minds into a microcosm of plonging, scattered bleep diffusion on ‘Earthen’, touching on TG-esque possessed noise textures in the oil of ‘Second Thoughts’, and a grinding beatdown groover ‘Conspiracies’.
