Boomkat Product Review:
'Eldfjall' was Danish sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard's first solo album for the Touch label, having previously collaborated with Philip Jeck on Soaked. Eldfjall is an ambitious undertaking: Kirkegaard set about recording volcanic activity and the geothermal motions of Icelandic geysers using a number of sensor microphones placed into the earth itself. The outcome is an auditory document of the geological makeup of subterranean Iceland, and makes for an extraordinarily immersive listen, permitting a detailed encounter with unseen forces. Just as Chris Watson's field recordings present the listener with detailed portraits of wildlife in their natural habitats, Kirkegaard's work gives an insight into the surprisingly tumultuous and varied commotion going on within the rocks and soil beneath us, which never ceases to be a fascinating, tremendously engrossing experience. Highly recommended.
