Boomkat Product Review:
The inimitable Tomutonttu brings his fractal small sound psychedelia to Ducktails' New Images imprint. Also known as a core member of Fonal supergroup Kemialliset Ystävät, Tomutonttu aka Jan Anderzen is a brilliantly unquantifiable entity, known for performing exquisite improvised live shows with an arsenal of circuit bent machines, and creating an incredible catalogue of solo music for labels including Ultra Eczema and Beta-Lactam Ring Records. 'Elävänä Planeetalla' is probably his highest profile release to date, working to a supernatural agenda of morphing arrangements and overgrown electronics with the most beautiful effect. You could almost call 'Kuka on Mukana?' his take on disco, albeit for a pool side party populated by the like of High Wolf, Dolphins Into The Future and James Ferraro, while the chords of 'Luominen Jäi Kesken' *feel* almost like some alien strain of House music but the vocals and stray bolts of synth magic are from some other place entirely. The phosphorescing guitars of 'Lautta Lähtee' are as close as you'll get to Ducktails terrain, and well, we'll leave 'Siat Nousevat' for your discovery. Like the amazing Hertta Lussu ÄssÄ album our recently on De Stijl, this is just more evidence that Finnish musicians are making some of the maddest, most beguiling music around. Highly recommended.
