Scything, venomous, purple dubstep funk and syncopated donk from Bristol’s rudest on a mad one for his Kapsize label
Since debuting in 2007 with the grimy R&G hybrids of the ‘Kapsize’ EP in 2007 for Earwax, a division of Pinch’s Tectonic, Joker has become a go-to mastering guy, favoured for the ultra crisp bite of his mixdowns. His solo work took the back seat until recently with the brash badness of ‘Juggernaut’, and this double-header now cements his return with hard takes on a virulent brand of future funk.
‘Elastic Band’ goes in like Errorsmith or SOPHIE mimicking EDM, wielding super tart top lines - his speciality - on signature (Mc)Lean but brawny groove, but without the emo histrionics, shotting the sort of shots that require dental flossing after chow down. ’Small Down’ on the other hand yolks back to an almost bassline garage skip, but dipping the donk offbeat and stacking it with hair-kissing vamps, curiously recalling NZO’s pointillist decimated in the process. US-born, UK-based DJ ADHD gives ‘Elastic Band’ some fossil-fuelled four-to-the-floor American thrust in the remix.
