Boomkat Product Review:
Revelatory bouquet of entrancing, prickly and colourful electronics from Brendan Dougherty, making a sharper, brighter turn from the hard-nosed minimalism of his Sensate LP for Entr’acte; all well recommended to fans of CoH, Powell, Lorenzo Senni, The Automatics Group!
On a modestly hyper-futurist bent, Economy and Failure presents a side to Brendan Dougherty that we weren’t previously aware of. Like his prior outing Sensate, Brendan makes great use of a paucity of elements and filigree rhythmic structures, grabbing our attention thru their texture and strong flavour. But unlike that LP, colour and emotion are key to this new effort, edging it much closer to some of the most memorable efforts in avant-dance music from this decade.
From the tender strokes of No Rendition, which could easily be attributed to Lorenzo Senni or Theo Burt, the LP blossoms in bittersweet style from pinched, strobing techno audness in Tonearm to gorgeous, nerve-dancing trance arps and off-kilter bass surges on Perfecter, with a couple of tart palate-cleansers leading into Alva Noto-esque minimal techno on Below, a mad whorl of dub techno in Kolkhoz Three, and the salty tempered trance ecstasy of Doom The Mooch, saving a real beauty in Moneyed for the closing statement.
