Scandi free jazz-psychrock-fusion supergroup Fire! Orchestra really show what they’re about on 2hr magnum opus ‘Echoes’, brimming with input by some 43 (!) members, finely tempered by mixing from Jim O’Rourke.
Typically revolving core members Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin, and notably starring the late, great Joe McPhee in their massed ensemble, Sweden’s Fire! Orchestra present their most ambitious album since beginning with 2013’s ‘Exit!’; a sprawling beast that reveals a rare pedigree in myriad fields stretching from panoramic, modal, spiritual jazz to swooning big band works, avant chamber pieces, cosmic caterwaul, hallucinatory Brazilian experimentalism and heaviest jazz-funk groovers. It’s perhaps the sort of grand scale project that could only come from a country with proper arts funding and heads who hear the value in this sort of endeavour, and with epic, rapturous results resonating classic works by Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Hermeto Pascoal and David Axelrod that surely justify its creation.
