Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation
You'd be hard-pressed to fault the quality of the reissues that come out of the Numero camp - they're just mindblowingly good. With each release you can count on discovering a pool of music largely unheard outside of an elite collectors' circuit. That in itself would be enough, but the company's record in terms of mastering and packaging their compilations with impeccable love and attention is frankly, formidable. That's certainly true of this latest collection, which concentrates on a largely forgotten reservoir of music culled from the catalogue of the Twinight label, one of the key imprints of Chicago's '60s and '70s soul scene. Hit maker Syl Johnson was the main player in all this, and these two discs bear the fruits of his toils, with an artist line-up including Nate Evans, Renaldo Domino, Annette Poindexter, The Notations and Chess Records alumni, The Radiants. This hugely impressive double disc set includes some seriously extensive liner notes detailing a full label history complete with previously unpublished photos. Highly recommended!
