Boomkat Product Review:
The debut album by Mohn - the latest incarnation of longtime sparring partners Wolfgang Voigt and Jorg Burger - has been arguably the shiniest carbuncle in the Kompakt crown this year. One of its strongest cuts, the brooding, ambient techno-pop killer 'Eberplatz 2020', is now given a single release with some strong remixes: Burger sharpens it up for the dancefloor, without losing the organic vibe - felt especially in the chugging guitar lines and live-sounding snare hits - that made the original sing in the first place. Perhaps inevitably, Voigt steals the show with his 'HardTranceAtlanticXSMix), accentuating the wistful choral pads and sweeping strings for maximum dancefloor psychodrama and Replicant existentialism - this is the work of a producer who knows what he likes, and knows what he's good at, totally owning his sound. After that, you half-expect Terranova's version to sound limp, but their crisp, techy fix is superbly constructed, zoning in on, and emboldening, the moody, motorik foundation of the original.
