Boomkat Product Review:
Oh now this is a real treat, one of the most important rock albums of the last 20 years. Okay I'm gushing, but this album did a lot for me and many other jaded rock fans when we all realised it was okay to let your guitar drone on for longer than Thurston's ever did and that it was okay to flaunt your heavy metal chops and still have time for a bit of the old avant-garde on the side. I think many of us will know too that this is the album which started the whole 'doom/drone' genre, and the album that Sunn o))) would come to base their entire sound upon - so anyone who's been rabidly following Southern Lord and the other exponents of black doom pretty much owe it to themselves to grab hold of this doublepack and thrust it above their heads in glee. Originally released in 1993, it sounds more relevant now than it ever did, the hypnotic droning chords cutting as deep as anything Sunn o))) have ever smelted in their factory of fear and I think this time around it's likely to have many more people tripping over themselves to get a copy. You see Earth are one of those bands that have had to come of age, people didn't get them for far too long and then something shifted, musical taste possibly, and before we know it Dylan Carlson and chums are the epitome of cool and hipsters everywhere are grabbing hold of anything they can find for over £50 on Ebay. Well thank goodness the music actually deserves the attention, unmissable!
