The absolute motherload of drone metal rears its unfathomable shape on a 30 year reissue edition ready to crush and captivate newcomers and hash-nailed old heads alike
Consisting of three of thee heaviest guitar-derived tunes of all time, ‘Earth 2’ practically knows no equal. Recorded in deep summer ’92 and issued in the winter of ’93, it followed their legendary, Kurt Cobain-starring single ‘Extra-Capsular Extraction’ with a radical celebration of bass guitar and amp worship that put lessons learned from teenage years of absorbing AC/DC, Slayer, and La Monte Young, into extraordinary, longform slabs of drone metal riffage forged in the firepits of heck.
‘Earth 2’ would lay the groundwork for their descendants Sunn 0))), and establish a near peerless reputation for Dylan Carlson and Earth among the heaviest bands of their generation that still holds up decades later, almost future-proofed by its singular, minimalist/maximalist bloodymindedness and a hard to imitate technicality that makes so much other heavy stuff pale in comparison. No need to bang on about it, it’s just self-evidently outstanding in its field if you have even the slightest interest in this stuff, but take it on trust they’re the only band aside to Autechre who’ve ever made this writer pull a whitey (Leeds Cockpit, supporting Sunn 0)))!), and for that we salute them, at the least.
