Boomkat Product Review:
Opening his back catalogue up to those without money to burn on eBay, 'Early Pedro' is a compilation of his first 3 EP's that got everyone chattering a few years back. With his sound developing before your ears, Pedro (or James Rutledge to his mates) opens with 'Assembled By 33', wherein he sounds not unlike post-rockers Fridge (albeit after a defrost) before 'Lay Down Mega Man' canters gracefully into the paddock with expertly veneered hip-hop beats and a clutch of laid back instrumentation. Onto 'Repent' and its slow motion massive attack splicing before we catapult ourselves forward in time to 'Koolhaas' where the Pedro sound has started to mature as strings and digital elements coalesce around a more abstract heart. The inevitable Four Tet comparison is at its most apt on the 'Pause' heavy 'D.A.R.Y.L' whilst the Kathryn Williams collaborations are the icing on the cake with the folk-inflected 'Demons In Cases', the Hi-De-Hi xylophones and swooping blunted vocals of 'To Lie Here and Not To Go Out' and the closing aural Vigo of 'Part 2'. Matured nicely - a strangely engrossing listen from start to finish. Buy!
